CO2-Prestatieladder

The CO2-Prestatieladder is a public tendering system that incorporates the climate impact of projects into the overall evaluation of infrastructure ventures. This crucial system enhances sustainability in the construction sector, addressing the previous emphasis on short-term cost over ecological considerations, often resulting in higher CO2 emissions during both construction and operational phases, along with a reduced infrastructure lifespan. Developed in the Netherlands by SKAO, Rijkswaterstaat, and Prorail, the CO2-Prestatieladder has been embraced by many Belgian construction companies, enabling them to expand their services into the Dutch market. Recognizing the need for a similar system in Belgium, CO2logic, alongside VBA-ADEB and under the dynamic leadership of Didier Cartage and Jan Janssen (for CO2logic), adapted the Dutch model to fit Belgium’s context and emission factors. This impactful project & the collaboration between VBA-ADEB, CO2logic and the construction sector successfully aligned the Flemish, Walloon, Brussels, and Federal departments, resulting in today’s Belgian CO2-Prestatieladder, an accelerator for CO2-reductions in the construction sector :

Paradise City

In 2015, Paradise City's passionate founders Dimitri Verschueren and Gilles Dedecker approached us with a vision to create the world’s greenest (electro) festival. Eric Dierckx and Antoine Geerinckx fondly recall advising them, "This won’t be easy, but it's possible—with deep commitment." While a few "greener" festivals existed, we aided them in laying the groundwork for a credible and sustainable festival by identifying and regularly recalculating the top environmental impacts to address. Their courageous implementation of our recommendations led to Paradise City being featured in The Guardian's top 10 festivals to watch even before their inaugural edition. Through diligence and professionalism, they have emerged as one of the world’s greenest festivals (in our opinion "probably the world's greenest festival"), proving that joy and responsibility can coexist while achieving profitability and sustainability. Paradise City serves as an inspiring model for festivals worldwide on how to operate responsibly.

Delhaize

In 2018, Delhaize faced significant criticism due to a "lego style collector" promotional campaign that went wrong. Although the negative impacts were minimal, the perception played against all real efforts made by the company. We helped them navigate this issue by taking full responsibility and reframing the narrative within the context of their broader sustainability efforts with important positive impacts, regarding packaging reduction and future commitments. This approach transformed a crisis into recognition of their substantial waste and climate action initiatives, the Lion's Footprint. To enhance their efforts further, we recommended that Delhaize expands its impact beyond its value chain, which they also did by becoming the first major supporter of River Cleanup. Delhaize played a very important role in River Cleanup's start-up and scaling. We appreciate the courageous leadership of Roel Dekelver and Xavier Piesvot in making this a reality.

River Cleanup

In 2017, Thomas De Groote launched River Cleanup while seeking the funding needed to realize his vision. Coincidentally, as we were assisting Delhaize, we identified a perfect synergy. Delhaize provided financial support to help River Cleanup establish its foundations and scale its activities alongside other engaged brands and companies. With Thomas De Groote and Arno Doggen (formerly of Greentripper/CO2logic) at the helm, supported by a strong advisory board, River Cleanup has since removed 13,000,000 kg of plastic from rivers and mobilized over 300,000 volunteers worldwide. Antoine Geerinckx has been an active board member since the beginning. The dedication of the River Cleanup team is truly inspiring, and their impactful work brings hope to many globally. Pioneering climate projects in Africa

Since 2007, the teams at CO2logic have pioneered climate projects across Africa, including Burkina Faso, Benin, Rwanda, DRC, and Liberia. Led by Herman Noppen (CO2logic), we have collaborated closely with multiple NGOs, helping to develop & organize certification processes while securing corporate financing for the development of Gold Standard-certified climate projects. We have effectively founded and financed exemplary climate initiatives in Africa alongside top-tier corporations, here are a few examples:

Open Source CO2 Emission Factors

At CO2logic, we noticed the widespread use of incorrect emission factors online, leading both small companies and larger ignorant firms to miscalculate their carbon footprints and submit inaccurate figures in their sustainability reports. Recognizing the need for reliable information, led by Jan Janssen, we developed a basic open-source website, in 2020, aggregating correct emission factors. This resource allowed everyone—equipped with the right skills—to accurately calculate their carbon footprint and promotes climate literacy and action: Emission Factors

CO2 Neutral Label

In 2007, a growing number of companies expressed the desire to take climate action, but it became increasingly challenging to distinguish between those genuinely committed to making a difference and those merely making claims. This discrepancy was discouraging for companies that were actively investing in the critical transition toward sustainability. To address this, we established the CO2 Neutral label, ensuring that those who truly acted on climate change received recognition. To obtain the label, companies must calculate their carbon footprint according to the GHG Protocol or Bilan Carbone, develop a reduction plan, and then offset remaining emissions while transparently communicating the scope of their actions. By 2018, around 80% of the Bel20 companies were working with CO2logic, and over 140 companies had earned the label. Together, we have helped avoid or reduce more than 2,500,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions both within and beyond value chains, comprising approximately 2.5% of Belgium's emissions, all achieved with a dedicated team of around 40 FTEs. After facing criticism regarding the label’s perceived misleading nature—largely driven by a few envious competitors—we have since refined the label to ensure full transparency and clarity. Discover more about it here: CO2 Neutral Label .

Electrik Children (2012): Pioneering Carbon-Neutral Filmmaking

In 2012, Jessica Caldwell, a young movie producer from New York, reached out to CO2logic to assess the carbon footprint of her debut film, Electrik Children , directed by the talented Rebecca Thomas. Having already completed filming, they were eager to understand the climate impact of their project, especially given the extensive travel involved. Concerned about their film's environmental footprint, they sought to illuminate their impact and contribute to climate initiatives corresponding to their findings.

Our analysis revealed that transportation to shooting locations and the mobility of actors and crew—particularly through flights—were the primary contributors to the film's carbon emissions. This insight underscored the importance of strategic geographical planning for future productions, advocating for more scenes to be filmed in studios to minimize environmental impact.

Climate Education Program

In 2009, we launched the Climate Education Program, sending climatologists to schools to inform and educate children about climate change. As the program flourished, we transferred it to our friends at Goodplanet, as it wasn't our core focus, and we were unable to manage its growth effectively. More than 200 schools subscribed to the initiative. We extend our thanks to the early sponsors, including DPG Media (Koen Clement & Christian Van Thillo from De Persgroep), Lampiris, and Dieteren for their support.

Co-creation of Go Forest

In 2020, award-winning Sarah Parent approached Antoine Geerinckx and the CO2logic team with the vision of creating a tree-planting company. Together, with Sarah’s enthusiasm and drive, we established Go Forest, conducting the necessary due diligence on proposed projects to ensure their viability. Later Go Ocean was created within Go Forest with the very dynamic Marte Greefs.

Co-creation of Naturalogic

In 2013, Eric Dierckx and Antoine Geerinckx co-founded Naturalogic, a natural capital advisory entity aimed at advancing the environmental Profit & Loss (e-P&L) framework for enterprises and products in order to dive into the true costs of products & services & identify the risks and hotspots for companies to improve. However, as this service proved to be too specialized and niche for broader appeal, it was eventually reintegrated into CO2logic to enhance its impact.

CO2logic & CO2logic Inc.

The concept of CO2logic emerged in 2005 when Antoine Geerinckx realized his work at VK Group, engineers & architects (part of Sweco now), was too narrowly focusing on real estate. In order to have a bigger impact he should start-up a company that would support all sectors such as energy, industry, transport, agriculture,...When reading an article about the Kyoto Protocol and the crucial role of energy efficiency, renewable energies, and forestry in combating climate change, it all came together. CO2logic was later officially founded in 2007 by Tanguy Du Monceau and Antoine Geerinckx, who, alongside a fantastic team, pioneered corporate and public climate action in Belgium. Tanguy Du Monceau left CO2logic in 2013 to create the beautiful Pulse Foundation. Antoine Geerinckx continued to scale CO2logic from Belgium and the US (later CO2logic Inc. and then sold to Agendi) and, in 2021, CO2logic was sold to South Pole - The Climate Company, a global leader in climate action. At the peak of CO2logic in 2021, with Benoit Quittre as CEO (Kaya) our services & advisory reduced approximately 2.500.000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to +/- 2,5% of Belgium's CO2 emissions. Antoine Geerinckx remains an ambassador to CO2logic and a South Pole shareholder.

Airscan

Officially founded in 2018 by Antoine Geerinckx and Jerome De Waele (CEO), Airscan addresses air quality and public health concerns. When establishing our CO2logic office, we prioritized creating a healthy working environment. After identifying air quality monitoring hardware developed by a CNRS spin-off, Antoine conducted the first measurements with the help of Stéphane Schump and Victor Buisseret. Realizing that everyone deserves to know whether the air they breathe is healthy, we launched Airscan, which now assists many responsible companies in monitoring and improving their air quality. Additionally, Airscan supports Green Building Certifications as the first Belgian Performance Testing Organization (PTO). Explore more at Airscan .
